The Herbert Read

Library

 

Named after the great English art theorist Herbert Read, the Herbert Read Library is a small but specialist library for anyone with an interest in art, culture, literature, classics, history and more. It comprises books donated by the University of Leeds, the American and Finnish embassies in Nicosia, Benedict Read and Michael Paraskos, and purchases made by the Cornaro Institute itself.

 

Located at the Cornaro Institute in the centre of Larnaca, it is a lending library which is open to all upon payment of a membership fee and security deposit.

 

The current annual membership fee is 20 euro per year.

The current security deposit is 50 euro.

 

The membership fee allows you to take out up to a maximum of three books at any one time, for a period of up to four weeks. Some books have shorter loan periods, but you will be advised of these either on the book itself or by the librarian.

 

The security deposit is used to pay any for any damages to books or to replace books if they are not returned. If you decide to leave the library, and you have returned all your loan books in good condition, you will have the security deposit returned to you.

 

Late Return of Books

 

All books borrowed must be returned to the library and checked in by the librarian before the final due date stamped or written in the book at the time of borrowing. If the book is not returned by this due date a fine of 20 cents a day is payable up to a maximum fine of 5 euro per book. If the book is not returned within 60 days after the original due date it will be judged lost and the borrower's security deposit will be used to purchase a replacement. If that happens the borrower will be excluded from membership of the library.

 

Renewals and Telephone Renewals

 

Books borrowed may have the due date extended or "renewed" in person at the library or by telephone (telephone 2425 4042) providing the book has not been requested by another library member. Where a request for the book has been made by another library member the borrower must return the book by the due date given to them.

Artists and Students Using the Cornaro Institute

 

Membership of the Herbert Read Library is not automatic and so anyone wanting to use the Herbert Read Library must join the library, paying the necessary fees, regardless of whether they are enrolled on any other activity at the Cornaro Institute, including studying or studio rental.
